In Response to “Do You Read the Terms and Conditions”

After reading through this article I was not particularly surprised by what I was seeing. An experiment was conducted to see just how many people actually read the terms and conditions before they agree to sign up for services. The article showed that only 98% actually noticed that pieces of the terms and conditions seemed off. An example from the article “Do You Read the Terms and Conditions,” shows that these people all agreed to giving up their first born child. This was only a joke, but it leads us to think about all the absurd things we have agreed to in the past. I did not find this to be shocking. For me personally I am not someone to sit there and go through all the terms and conditions. I would say based on the data I am in the majority with this one. The article discusses how on average it would take about 40 minutes of your day to get through all that information. Typically most people do not have 40 minutes to spare on something that feels so tedious. This leads us to think about what would it take to improve this situation and get people to understand what they are actually agreeing too. It would have to come down to having terms and conditions that were not so lengthy and tedious to read.
